My girlfriend is suffering from heartburn during pregnancy. We have been advised to take gaviscon as apparently it is advertised as safe for use while pregancy. HOWEVER after reading the ingredients I have seen that it contains sodium saccharin (an artificial sweetener), I have read reports on the dangers of sweetners and I was wondering if there is any other medician she can take for heartburn which is safe and does not contain these harmful sweetners?

My wife is suffering from heartburn too she is 36wks pregnant at the moment. She has used gaviscon through all her pregnancies but if you want an alternative drinking a glass of cold milk can help give some comfort or rennies are worthwhile trying. Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy for you both.

I had moderate heartburn with my first pregnancy. If I remember correctly it started at about the time of my second trimester. But, with my second pregnancy... Whoa Nelly! I was eating a bottle of tums a week , I think! It started at about the same time and got progressively worse until delivery. My OB/GYN said that it was because I "carried" my babies differently. My boy was very low and my girl (the second) was very high. The more the baby presses on your actual stomach, the more heartburn you are likely to have. (And as for the heartburn/baby having hair myth is concerned, both of my kids had lots of hair. Lol.)

doctors prescribe gaviscon for heartburn so it can't be all that bad but if you really aren't happy about it drinking milk helps heartburn and its also great for mum and growing baby!.. she may need quite a bit but it also tastes alot nicer than gaviscon

good luck

ohh heartburn during pregnancy is meant to be a sign that the baby will have lots of hair, i know i had terrible heartburn and all mine children were born with loads of hair!

I would not take that either. Alot of women take tums during pregnancy but honestly I do not know how safe it is. I heard vinager helps with heartburn but there again I don't know. Personally I just suffer or drink milk which helps alot sometimes. Have her eat smaller more frequent meals meals, drink lots of water, and stay away from spicy, high fat foods.

Gaviscon is my life saver i have had terrible heartburn for most of my pregnancy, the doctor is quite happy to give me it on prescription so i really do think its the best thing for your girlfriend.
however if you really are not happy for her to use it she could try strong mints but she will need alot of them ( i also use mints when out )
this is my 5th baby and all my children are 100% healthy.

Dave

There are a variety of other antacids available. Your local chemist should be able to advise you. Boots is particularly helpful.

Best wishes, J
