Any agreement you enter into with a 3rd party, whether written or verbal can be a legally binding contract. In theory we all enter into such contracts countless times a day.

Contracts for credit an suchlike are overseen by various authorities to ensure they adhere to appropriate legislation.

Perhaps you to be more specific in your question.

A contract can be any agreement between two or more parties with the intention of being binding. There has to be 'consensus ad idem' or meeting of the minds ie. both parties have to agree that they are entering into a contract and what type of contract it is.

Some common types of contracts:

sale
lease
suretyship
employment
cession
