They are not mutually exclusive. Most purportedly realistic (what ever that means) paintings are abstractions of things. Most Abstract paintings are abstractions of feelings or ideas. The pure abstract does not deal with things at all. Realistic means something a 2D item cannot be, and so is an abstraction of something.
