Does this mean he is on drugs? He has been hanging with some strange characters lately. They wear funny clothes and dont have decent haircuts. They smell of patchouli, and ever worse...they drive a VW Minibus painted with day-glo flowers.

We found out he is going to some anti-American war protest in March. These people are very organized, they even printed up flyers. That despicable Cindy Sheehan person is leading these kids down the wrong path. She has already been arrested several times. She has been hosted by enemies of the USA like the Venezualan strongman Hugo Chavez. That's sending a totally inappropriate message to young people. Is it too late to get him some help? Or will he just end up in jail like 'Baghdad' Cindy??

No it doesn't mean he's on drugs. It means he's tired of seeing poor American soldiers die without a cause. Instead of questioning his motives you should give him a pat on the shoulder for being politically mature enough to stand up for his beliefs.

Alright the first thing I'm going to say is Calm Down. It looks like there are several problems you need to deal with, but the situation your describing is nowhere near out of hand. I sincerely doubt that your son is on drugs, and if you tell him that you believe that the only reason he would being doing these things is drugs, he will stop listening to anything you say, because he will feel you are insulting him, his beliefs, and his intelligence. I can not stress the importance of this enough IF HE DOES NOT FEEL THAT YOU RESPECT HIM, HE WILL NOT RESPECT YOU. It sounds like you have two issues with your son's behavior, one being his political views and activism, and the other being his friends. It is important that you sit down and talk with him about his political beliefs. WITH him, not TO him. Ask him why he believes what he does, where he got his information. Tell him what you believe and why. Schools today do not teach American history past WWII, so it is very likely that he does not know any of the history that led to the current conflict. It is also possible that he knows things that you don't. Listen to him if he does. Also, remind him, and yourself, that being Anti-war and Anti-America are not the same thing. If he cannot support the war, and truly believes that it is wrong, then help him find ways to express that feeling that do not attack America and the good things our country stands for. I'm going to be blunt and rude on the issue of his friends. Get over it. These problems you mention, their hair and clothes, are personal choices, that you may not approve of but have nothing to do with who they really are, or whether or not they are a good influence on your son. Have you ever actually spoken with them, and gotten to know them? If you have, and they have given you reason to dislike them based on who they are, if they are in fact into drugs, or alchoholic binges, then yes, you should talk to your son about your concerns. But if you don't actually know them, then your son will dismiss anything you say. There is a saying to the extent that any young person who isn't Liberal has no passion, and any older person who isn't Conservative isn't thinking. Your son's passion is something to be proud of, even if his direction could be corrected.

Sounds like your son is developing a social and political conscious..instead of all the possibilities that he could get into,.he is developing who and what he is, this is a good thing. Activism is not a bad word and does not mean he is on drugs.

Remember, our children are the future, Going to jail because you have expressed and stood for your principles is not a bad thing.

since you are the parent, it is your resoncibliity to teach your kid. obviously you havent been doing this. your proally like every other parent, mine include, you do not teach right and wrong, you just punish when they do wrong.
who your child hangs out with is also your responsiblility. even if he does not like it. as a parent, you need to meet ALL of your childrens friends, for the purpose of knowing what type of effect they are having on your children. my childrens friends will spend lots and lots of time at my home. when they are here i can observe them and teach my childrent right and wrong.

let your children be who they are, and have their own personality and creativity, but teach them the morals underlaying that personality.

speaks someone who was punished and not taught, i will NOT do that diservice to my children.

Good for your son, who has brains to think for himself! This is not "anti-American", it is anti-war, whenever wars are unnecessary. And I think these views are similar to those of the great US presidents, Roosevelt and Truman.
