It is not the urban youth alone, but even the average citizen look at elections with an aversion. IN REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY, PEOPLE EXPECT PROPER REPRESENTATION, instead we find clever manipulations of votes. Vote banks are created and the incompetent personalities reach positions in politics. Illiterates become Ministers and Chief Ministers and rule highly qualified persons. Democracy is being made a mockery. On an average, even 50% votes are not being cast. The intelligent electorate have less respect for the system of the present day. Unless the election system and the politics is cleaned, people will gradually have less interest in the democratic system.

Probably the lack of candidates that they can connect with, which is the same reason many Americans have deserted the Polls.

Because no one addresses their problems and they feel like politicians don't really give a damn anyways, they just try to use them to get votes. I would want to vote for someone who represents me, not ignore me.

Apathy. Young people are taught by experience that their opinion does not matter, so they quit caring enough to do something about it.
