OMG who ever said for cheap labor is indeed STUPID!... why do you degrade your own kind... goodness.. do some reasearch.. ask around or something... but dont just say whatever you think is right... ANYWAYYYYY...
I am an american citizen taking nursing in the Philippines...
in actual terms... there are some hospitals that recruit Filipino nurses to work abroad... that does happen... and it is also true that a lot of the nurses here (and future nurses) look forward to working abroad bcoz of the oppurtunity... nurses here dont get paid worth shiii... and theyre being over worked... soo why not look for a job else where to find better opputunities... in which you get the deserved pay and respect...
Filipinos are holistic in ever aspect. Caring as well as intellectual.. with big dreams... talking to my fellow classmates here.. they really wanna help out their parents and have a different kinna life... the kind that is not lived in a third world country...
And the US looks for those kind of characteristics in a nurse... friendly, hardworker, knows how to sacrifice, appreciative etc. etc i could go on... thats why they looove Filipino nurses... we know how to give and take...
so yeahhhh thats my two cents!

As someone who used to work in recruiting nurses from the Philippines to work in the U.S. I can tell you that the Philippines has one of the highest population of nursing graduates, and with the U.S. facing a nursing crises its only natural recruiting would happen there. Also you have to figure in the language. Most Filipinos speak English already which is important when working in a U.S. medical facility. Its not about cheap labor. Filipino nurses make the same amount money here that an American nursing graduate makes. Hospitals will pay big money because of the shortage here.

Tom1941 gives a very good answer to this question, but i like to clarify something he said. There is basically a nation wide test that nurses will take to get licensed, however the board requirements are different in each state. A nurse must also be licensed in each state they work but unlike the doctors there is a greater acceptance arrangement between states for Nurses.
on the Statement of lower wages not being true, i would like to add that when a hospital applies for a visa they must certify to the immigration service that they are paying a wage equal to the standard wage of an American citizen with the same credentials and experience

From the Dallas Morning News Website:
"The Philippines has sent nurses to U.S. hospitals since the 1960s to help fill periodic shortages. Its nursing curriculum follows a U.S. model set up during 50 years of colonial rule, and all classes are taught in English."
^^ The reason. Additional comments:
"'The Philippines is the leading exporter of nurses in the world,' said Kathleen Fritsch, regional adviser in nursing for the World Health Organization's Manila office."
"'Nursing professionals here suggest another approach: Send U.S. students to the Philippines to study nursing and then return them home to work.'"
Besides, there's nothing wrong with the entry of nurses to the U.S. It's even a partnership--Filipino nurses are SAVING LIVES, while the U.S. is paying them, unlike the unfair wages found in the Philippines. So more power to this partnership: countries helping each other.

Filipino nurses can make more money in the USA. The USA does not look for Filipino nurses, it is the other way around, Filipino nurses look to work in the USA and because of the shortage of nurses, USA hospitals are more than willing to hire qualified nurses. Since there is an established history of very good nurses coming from the Philippines, USA hospitals will be more likely to hire one from the Philippines than someone who comes from another country.

it is because filipinos are hardworking and they are willing to work overtime, 7 days a week. They are also charming and the nursing schools in the Philippines are very good. Filipinos also speak good English with an accent that Americans understand. That's why US gets nurses from the Philippines.

U.S. is short of nurses..Philippines has a lot of skilled and educated nurses. Why does it bother you? Try to be thankful that all of the Philippines' skilled workers go to other countries and help that country. On the other hand, the Philippines is just becoming more and more on the low-profile. And besides, our nurses won't come to your country if you don't need their services.

It amazes me how some people in the Philippines look for every opportunity to ditch the U.S. To say the U.S. begs the Philippine Nurse to come to the U.S. or takes advantage of the Philippine Nurses is crazy. Some Philippine Nurses would love to go to the U.S. There are more Philippine Nurses looking to go to the U.S. than the U.S. has openings. To say the U.S. brings them because they are cheap labor also shows how stupid you are. Hospital Salaries are generally preset and depending on seniority and degree regardless of where you are from you make the same. Many U.S. Hospitals have Unions. To say that the U.S. brings Nurses, but not Doctors for some reason to take advantage of the people in the Philippine also shows your stupidity. Every State in the U.S. has its on State Board Exam and a doctor must qualify for every State he/she wishes to practice in. There is not one Nation wide qualifying exam as there is for Nurses. Obviously you have not been to the U.S. we have many doctors from Pakistan, India and other places around the World. If they qualify they can take a State Medical Board exam in the State they wish to practice and if they pass they will get a license. Also 99% of the Doctors work Independent of the Hospital they are not on the Hospital payroll. It also cost a minimum of $500,000 to open a well equiped Doctors Office in the U.S. so a doctor could compete for business. Doctors are business men and women not employees. I apologize for being nasty, but it just chaps my bu-- that some of the Philippine People take every opportunity to lie and berate the U.S. and the President of the Philippine.
U.S. Hospital have to look abroad because there is not enough U.S. Applicants. If there was they would have to hire them before going abroad. A hospital has to demonstrate to the U.S. Immigration that there are not U.S. Citzens qualified for the Nursing Job available. The question to ask is why are American Students not studying nursings? Is it because it requires working nights, holidays and weekends? Is it because the long hours of standing on your feet? Is it because of blood, bed pans, etc.? Until the U.S. addresses the problems of why young people do not want to be nurses we will continue to look abroad.
By the way if they work seven days a week and long hours they get paid overtime that is the FEDERAL LAW. I am sure a lot would love to work over 40 hours a week so they can make time and a half and double time. In the U.S. we have labor laws that regulate the number of hours you can work and the compensation you must be paid for working over 40 hours.

What a bunch of Bull Crap. The Filipinas will do anything to get out of the Philippines. The Filipinas are constantly seeking employment anywhere in the world. The US does not solicit Filipina nurses to work in the US.
Filipina nurse are no better than nurses from any country. Nursing schools and nursing board examinations in the Philippines turn out a very marginally educated nurse.

the US looks for nurses in the philippines because they consider the filipinos as the best nurses around. i myself being a filipino do understand why. its because of our culture. caring and loving the sick or disabled member of the family is a part of our culture. that is why its easy for us to take care of others because essentially its a part of us.
