most pilot lights are now electrical starts but if you have an old one you need to get into the lower fire box.. use the knob on the front to turn to start. then use a match to light it. then turn it back up. if it doesnt hold then you may have a bad coil which cost only $5-10 to replace yourself... it just screws in. check your airflow and make sure it is getting air. then check for drafts

on the heater, turn the red valve on top to pilot..it twists to an arrow mark. At the bottom of the tank there is the opening for the area where the tiny gas line goes in, that has to be opened so that you can see inside. Use a flashlight look inside for where the pilot light gas line goes. Using a long match you will be re-lighting that spot inside the bottom. To do so, you will have to push down on the red valve as it is set on pilot and hold it down even after it is lit. Once the pilot is lit, blow out your match immediately, but, still hold down the red valve. You should hold this red valve down for about 30 seconds. After 30 sec. let go. Now, look in the bottom and the pilot should stay lit. If it is lit, close up the bottom area that you opened to see in. Once that is closed turn the red valve to the on position. Careful to turn to on and not off. You should hear the rush of the flame lighting in the bottom. If all this didn't work the first time..you might try it once more in case you missed a step. If not call a pro..

sometimes you need a longer than normal match
all the gas heaters I ever had have the instructions on the unit -
very easy to follow - step by step
if you cannot light it - call a service technician - from your gas company
the little expense of a visit is well worth the price of burning down your residence
