Very thought provoking and totally amoral. It seems to show how quickly society can break down and, when confronted with ones own mortality, the instinct to survive is all-consuming.
It further illustrates how love can be a powerful weapon against an increasingly violent and uncaring world and how adversity can bring some people with little in common together to form a strong and enduring union.
Or am I just a romantic fool...?

I loved the movie, however the sequel just didn't own up to the original. But the whole concept of how the government deals with the wild youth is something to consider. The ideals of corporal punishment sanctioned by the nation, and where only the law is to survive. A little Lord of the Flies meets Running Man. Pray Hollywood doesn't corrupt this movie with a remake like they do with all other Japanese masterpieces.

Well when I found out about Battle Royale, I was in year 9 as well and it did me have me questioning what my year would do in that situation because we're at the stage where we still gossip, have crushes, have grudges from incidents we probably won't remember when we're older, and we treasure our friends more than anyone else because we can confide in them more than we can in adults and I gues it would influence us in that situation. The tagline is appropriate though, would we be able to kill our best friends to survive just because the adults told us to, the goal of survival is higher too because our lives hasn't even begun to take course. Lol whats funny is that I did ask my friends what they would do and I got the obvious answers, no of course I wouldn't kill you, but I tend to think our thoughts change when you get face to face with whatever situation it is and hey it's more easier said than done isn't it.

I think it's a really good film. I don't think it's supposed to shock though (if it is it failed). It's a cross between Lord of the Flies and Death Race 2000.
(just read the comparison with Running Man above also, yes I agree).

I have seen it. I had it recommended by some friends and I have to say I hated it. To me its was a nothing more than a nasty piece of sado-masochism involving the images of schoolchildren (actors over the age of 18 or otherwise, it still the IMAGE of schoolkids.).
It was uncomfortable to watch and had no discernable plot, point or ideas.

Yes & it was thought provoking.
I didn't like the violence but accepted that it was necessary in the context of the film & story.
It explored human nature and attitudes well.
Let's hope it never happens!

The first one was pretty good. I thought they could have gone a bit deeper into the pyschological side of things. ~The action was great though. Don't bother with the second one.

I thought it was abit strange but quite clever how it shows you how far people will go just to survive. You would never believe it in real life but its true. I wuite enjoyed it altough it was quite gruesome!
