Ignoring the fact that most of the answers so far have merely mentioned that some humans lack compassion toward other humans, and as a collective we have besieged our planet and our environment, we are different from every animal that inhabits the Earth.

Humans, are unique because we can look to the future and plan for it as well. I have a pet that I absolutely adore. However, when it comes to preparing for the typhoons that hit my little island, I am the one who is stocking up on food and water. Ensuring we have plenty of medication, first aid kits, flashlights, cat food etc, is my responsibility. Sleeping under the covers is my cat’s responsibility.

Additionally we have a very developed sense of mortality (or at least most of us do). Most animals shun away or fear death/pain. However, it seems that the majority of humans fear, worry, or hope as to what will happen after the advent of death. (the basis of most religions). Therefore, our struggle to understand what happens to us or doesn’t happen to us after we die also sets humans apart from animals.

Like I said at the beginning of my answer, most people who have answered the question so far have expressed their frustration over “man’s inhumanity to man”. To an extent I too share this frustration. However, I have heard of and witnessed first hand great deeds of compassion. I believe that a person is capable of enormous acts of kindness, and possesses the potential to be heroic and noble. The very notion that so many individuals answering this question expressed a desire for greater compassion in the world, demonstrates how much we really are separate from animals. My cat has no concern as to what happens to other cats. My friend’s dog doesn’t fret over what befalls other dogs. Therefore, even if some individuals choose not use it, our ability to worry and be concerned about our fellow man/woman sets us apart.

Finally what other species has the ability to actually ponder the very question you asked. We are the only creatures on Earth that could pose this question to so many of our brethren. We are also the only creature that can change the Earth, and our environment. We can change it for the better or worse. We are the only species that can stop another species from going extinct. We are the only species that can save or destroy a habitat. Therefore, because of the massive good or evil we can do, we are most definitely separate from animals.

Having larger brains doesn't really seem to have helped us. We are killing the planet and are generally spiteful and unhelpful. Animals can be spiteful, but most of the time they are acting on instinct. Being more "intelligent" doesn't make a being more worthy (what about those with learning disabilities etc) - and I'd rather not be able to feel as deeply, because a lot of the time I feel like crap.

I don't because we all evolved from the same thing. we are all equal in strength. humans have a bigger brain . animals have abigger brawn. we both have emotions and there are traitors in both clans. some people think that animals don't have motherly love. some scientists think that animals think less and act upon instinct upto 90%. you'll know how true that is if you consider the mother cheetah which caught the snake that gulped its cubs and squeezed out of it the remains of it's 2 cubs, or the mother elephant which dragged around its dead calf for hours together, trying to get it upon its feet. If anyone still thinks that it's all instinct then i believe that it is just instinct for them to be so stuck up.

Larger brain doesnt mean smarter. To think or feel? Come on!!!! Animals can sense and determine when a natural disaster will hit faster than humans respond without technology. Humans just have the most impact upon this earth, doesn't make us smarter, makes us smarter and dumber relying on technology to live our lives. Hell, some ppl with paying jobs don't even know how to do simple addition or subtraction, so you depend on calculators and computers to do it for you. Talk about incompetence. Animals live the way this earth runs, and humans destroy the planet cuz we dominate.
