Some choose not to because they have careers and they have become well known by their maiden names (lawyers, doctors, etc.). Some come from very prominent families so they feel that they should keep their original name (look at the Kennedy's). Some don't because the husband has an embarrassing last name like Dykehouse or Butkis. Also if there will be no children in the marriage it might be better to keep your own name. Or if you have children from a previous marriage you may keep your first husband's name so it matches your children's. And of course some women are just modern and a little rebellious and they see taking the husband's name as a sign of ownership.

I didn't take my husband's last name mostly because of the paperwork. I'm in the military and did not want to change every document to his name. I did however compromise and made sure that our son had his last name. It can be annoying sometime, because people assume that our last names are the same and when corrected people act all wierd. I know that I love my husband and do not need to feel like the only way to show it is by taking his last name.

Well, it's usually a good idea to change your name after marriage especially if you want to avoid legal hassles and if you have kids ...less complications in getting their birth certs, school admissions etc...and no-one will ask them why their mom has a different last name.
However, a lot of women choose not to change their name after marriage because they have a certain identity and are not comfortable converting to mrs-whoever.
I think it's a personal choice.
Changing your name helps but only from the point of view of legal documentation.

Well some women like their last name, I want to have a hyphened name. That's better. I love my last name and though I love my future husband's last name as well, I want to keep mine....I'm just the independent type. Stubborn as all hell. Feminism does that to some women......you never grow out of it totally.lol

Pros would be knowing what to name the children. Many women don't because they are selfish, it's because of feminism. Maybe if the Husband's name is butts than maybe he should change it to hers.

I personally think some women wants to keep there individual identity alive...but then its practically a ego problem....whats in a name??? Coming to the first part of ur question...the use of husbands name makes me feel gr8..it givs me a feeling that i belong to someone...in working field though previos name make works easier...so nam lo ya na lo...basically its only love that matters...depending on understanding of each partner.

I my case it was that his family name is shorter and worlds easier to spell, there's nothing more traumatizing to a child then not being able the wright out there own last name until the end of primary school
