John Wayne in The Searchers or John Wayne in Red River. Honorable mention: Daniel Day-Lewis who was nominated but robbed by Adrien Brody. Was he really better than Bill the Butcher?

There are several in this list as far as I'm concerned. For example: Tim Roth in the movie Rob Roy,John Wayne in The Shootist, Robert Preston in S.O.B.,David Bowie in Labyrinth, Robert Mitchum in Cape Fear or The Night of the Hunter, Mel Gibson in Man Without a Face, Bruce Willis in the movie In Country, Fran Sinatra in The Man With the Golden Arm, Val Kilmer in Tombstone, Steve Martin in Leap of Faith,Linda Fiorentino in The Last Seduction, Spencer Tracy in several movies like Inherit the Wind,Bad Day at Black Rock, Maureen O'Hara in The Quiet Man, Johnny Depp in....well just about everything he does,....like I said the list goes on.

The Color Purple. It has the record for the most nominations (11) and no wins. W. Goldberg lost best actress and O. Winfrey and M. Avery lost supporting actress. (Spielberg directed this!!)
I would also beg to differ with the decision to pass over Edward Norton for his role in American History X. It went to Roberto Benigni for Life is Beautiful. A good movie, but Edward was excellent.
GREAT question!!

My vote goes to the "Stars on Ice," World Figure Skating Champion, Scott Hamilton.
But let's not forget Olympia Gold Medalist, Kristi Yamaguchi and figure skaters (Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean) and my all time favorites (Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini - they both were an absolute delight.)
