If you want to hold the child on your lap for the duration of the flight you do not need a ticket. However, if you want the child to have his/her own seat you will have to purchase a ticket. It all depends on what you are compfortable with and how well you think the child will be on the flight. My wife has done both several times, its not the easiest thing to do (holding the child) but it sure is a lot cheaper! Besides the flight times are not too long between stops. Good luck!

I would recommend that you buy your child a seat. A lot of airlines sell discounted tickets for children. I have flown with my child many times and I have always bought her a seat. The main reason is, if there is major turbulance, or a bump, I would not be able to keep her safe in my arms. She would need to be properly restrained in her car seat, strapped into the plane seat. If you have seen the movie Fearless, you know what I am talking about. Another tip I can give you, which you probably know, is bring milk for her to drink during take off and landing.
12 hours of travel time is a long time to be holding a baby. I am sure you'll want to have her in her own seat during part of that time. When she sleeps, you can put her in her car seat and give your arms a rest. Good luck, get there early, and try to ignore the people who give you dirty looks when you get on the plane. There will be plenty of people there who love children and who have flown with a baby and understand it's a tough thing to do!
Note: I am not sure if all airlines do this, but Southwest does: We would reserve a seat for our child but not pay in advance. Upon arriving at the airport, we would find out if the flight was full. If it was not full, we could bring the car seat on for free!!! If it was full, we had to pay upon check in for the baby's seat. This was a great way for us to save money. We tried to get flights at less busy times, and we paid for the baby's seat approximately 1/2 of the time. You would have to contact the airline and see if they'd do this for you.

We've been there before! One time it was a short flight, and we held the baby. The next time, we bought a seat. I highly recommend the seat if you can afford it! My baby just did better, rested better, relaxed more etc in his car seat. Plus, it's safer for the baby in the car seat.
If it's not a full flight though, you may be able to get an extra seat anyway, but for such a long duration, I would buy the extra seat.

I would call the airline's but I know when I took my baby's car seat I had to pay for the seat that he took up. When I held my baby I did not have to pay for the baby to sit on my lap. I would call the airlines to see what new protocal they have these day's because this was back in the 80's when my child was a baby and flew with me.

I would pay for the extra seat, unless you don't mind having your child in your lap for an entire day. Granted, I know, you can't let them go at this age, but you are going to have a very very long day. Give yourself a break and buy the seat. You can nap comfortably while your child does.

I've found that when traveling with an infant or toddler it is easier to keep the child calm while being held and easier to tend to their needs. Plus airplanes are cramped as it is and the carseat will be more of a nuisance than help.

call the airline to make particular, however the toddler will maximum probable be pointed out as your toddler toddler, with probable a given call to make the computers chuffed. yet your toddler toddler does no longer desire an identity card or driving force's license to fly.

The baby will be more comfortable in her mother's lap. Whether you'll feel comfortable holding her all that time is a different story. It would depend on your temperament

Kids under 2 fly free. If you feed the baby during take off and landing, she will be calmer and hopefully sleep, also her ears won't pop.
