well i aint on nowhere near your continent.. but i know how irritating some of these nickanames/short forms can be..
i'm tryna think tho who sang the song which has the line 'i going going, back to back, to Cali Cali..' Tupac?? Biggie??? one of them..
Just take a deep breath, count backwards from 10 and u'll be alright..

I live in California and have never used Cali, in fact this is the only place i have seen that used...

Back to your current question, I agree with you 100% on this rediculous shortcuts. For instance, the word "Sacramento" but I hear many people pronounce it as Sacrameno all the time....it's stupid.

Cali is the designation for the street in Miami where all the nightlife is happening (8th street)

I dunno, I've lived in the bay area my entire life and have no problem with either Cali or 'the City'.
