Do you believe that we never quit our vices (like drinking, smoking or even drugs for some people, and other addictions like sex, etc etc) and just take long breaks from them? We make promises that seem false, and breakable.

sure you can quit, IF YOU want to, no one else can do it for you and you are only accountable to yourself really. your vices, handled in moderation are probably okay, addictions on the other hand, need to be addressed. addicts can be treated, not cured, but certainly the addict can control their behavior by choice. i know this fact as i am an addict, but i am not a user. it took me three times to my death bed to finally accept it, and realize i HAD to make a choice between living and dying. once that choice is made, it gets easier each day. if you would have asked me the same question 5 years ago i would have told you a whole different story, how addicts cannot quit, once an addict always an addict, and maybe that IS true, but choice can over rule your addiction if you live long enough to make the choice. this life is scary on a sober stomach, and i don't trust people who don't seek a personal release on occasion, such as a cigarette, a joint, a cocktail, sex, food, whatever.....we all need some relief on occasion, how we seek it though is just as important as what we seek.

In a way yes i do agree with you, we have the want to give these things up and make promises to others as a sort of extra incentive to give things up, but unfortunately some human beings have weak will power and at the first challenge towards their plight the addiction wins... at the cost of the person you made the promise to.
