I have a P-4 running Mercury "Kobian" mainboard. The BIOS seems to be quite outdated. What is the safest and the easiest way to update it ? or in otherwords "How can I flash my system's mainboard"

visit your motherboard manufacture's website and they should have the bios rom file for download. There must be a readme file that will walk you thru the process. Sometimes it comes with a flash utility. If your lucky, u get one that u can flash in windows environment. Otherwise it's more complicated. You might have to make a bootable floppy and flash it with a DOS utility.

Only use your board manufacturer's site (below) for getting bios updates but unless the bios is really causing the computer to play up its sometimes best not to do anything. You know that saying..if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

System boards are cheap these days. I think there is an epromm burner tool of some sort that you can utilize though. Thanks, http://www.desktopsupport.tv/
