The major auto makers have programs to help pay for the courses at local community colleges. Check out the manufacturer's web pages. They usually want you to find a dealership to "sponsor" you (term for let you do your apprentice work in their shop). They will pay you, it will be small, but in a very short time you will be an ACE certified mechanic and you can gain valuable knowledge as the dearship moves you around within their shop to let you get real savvy with their make. Once you are certified, the money will roll in. As with my experience in the auto industry, the benefits (the wife and I get new cars every year) are great!!!

i would work at an auto zone or pep boys or similar. NTB would be a good starting place also.

auto zone will get you a bunch of experiance on diagnosing problems, while NTB will get you a bunch of experiance on alignments, suspensions and other basics of a car.

dont be a tow truck driver. Its a bad, scary, and dangerous job.
