Pennsylvania law favors employers, and federal law covers very little for exempt(salaried) workers. Slavery ended in the 1860's. He is free to quit any time he wants. He can also choose to leave work when he wants to do so, or take breaks, and the only thing an employer can do is fire him at which time he gets unemployment benefits. There are rules about treating employees equally. The driving expense other than to and from work is a business expense. He does not have to use his car unless compensated. As to the company, unless his manager is the business owner or CEO, the correct path is meeting with her manager. Anything he is doing, he is choosing to do. He can basically tell them to hire someone else. People have to prepare for changes in jobs and not overextend themselves in credit.
