I recently bought a 04 BMW M3 that states it runs the 1/4 mile in 13.4. I'm wondering if that is fast or not?

I did not spend 50K I spent 41 out the door which is way below book. The E46 M3 has gone reletively unchanged since 01 when it came out. the newbody style will be out next year.

13.4 is pretty quick for most folks, but for a $40-50k car i'd say it's average at best. I've got a 02 Chevy truck that I dropped 5k in and it turns 11's, but then again it gets terrible gas milage and it will never handle like your BMW.

A few compairsions would be a C6 Vette (12.7) or a Shelby GT 500 (12.9), a cheaper (mid 20K's) Mustang GT (13.9), or a used LS powered Camaro or Trans-Am (13.4). For that price a new import won't touch you, but a good built one might give you a run for your money.

you spent a bit much on the car, and 13.4 is a fairly quick time, but if you wanted a 1/4 mile car, the M3 was the wrong choice. M3s are luxury based track cars, not drag cars. you could have saved a ton and gotten a much less refined LS based Fbody GM car (camaro SS's, trans ams, etc), or an 03-04 cobra.

your car is far too refined and balanced to be confined to a drag strip. Join up with your local BMW car club of america (BMWCCA), and get in on some of the track days and drivers education days. you will thank me later.

stepping on a gas pedal in a straight line requires little skill and gets old fast. Taking a car to a track and really refining your skills is 100000x more rewarding. Trust me.

The M3 isn't about straight line speed, it's about handling. In a straight line, you're going to get your *** handed to you by Mustangs and Camaros and whatnot which cost a lot less than your car. But you'll out-corner them.

fast is when you break into the 11s, but they don't drive well on your way to the grocery store
