I would like to get a Chameleon, what type should I get. I know they are difficult to keep, but I have experience with Iguanas, Basilisks, Water Dragon, Tegus, Savannah Monitors, Toads, Frogs, Turtles and Snakes. So I think I can handle it, and I'm doing alot of research online.

Good for you! It's good to see someone doing research on an animal they are interested in keeping BEFORE they get it!

I'd say look into a veiled, Jackson's, or panther chameleon. They are still demanding, but probably some of the more forgiving in terms of environmental conditions.

Another item for your consideration is gender. You will have to provide egg-laying facilities for a female, males get bigger, but can be easier to care for.

Here are some websites on chameleons:
http://www.animalarkshelter.org/cin/
http://www.coloherp.org/careshts/lizards/Chameleons.php
http://www.kingsnake.com/rockymountain/RMHPages/RMHveiled.htm

If you go to the last website, they also have a page where you can contact breeders/order chameleons. A good breeder is your best source of information on the species you select!

Good luck!

I'd say to get either a Veiled or a Jackson's chameleon. They are easier than most to take care of, and adapt to different places pretty easily. Just make sure that the chameleon is able to have a warm place to bask in. The Veiled and Jackson also have a better temperment, and have been through more captive breeding. Also, you should make sure that it has a pretty big space to move around in, and if you get more than one, keep them in completely separate areas except for a short time if you are going to breed them. Chameleons are very territorial and dont like other chameleons near them.

As far as what species you should get totally depends on how much space you can allow for it. If you've got only a small amount of space I would stick to a smaller species. Jackson, Jewel, and Senegal chameleons can do fine in something around 40G in size where as something that gets larger like a Veiled, Meullers or Panther should have a much larger enclosure. I've had many different species of chameleons and I have a personal affinity towards panther chameleons. I had a very large enclosure for him (3'X1.5'X6').

i would say it is all about looks, and how much cash you have. obviously the three main species of chameleon, jackson's, veiled, and panther, have their different attributes. so its all about whether you like horns, veils or ridiculous colors. then if its in your budget, but i have owned them all and i believe they are all equal in the difficulty of taking care of them.
