Ignorance, insecurity and an innate need to lash out. Often hate is like a virus that grows withon certain people to the point where they see hateful actions as a perfectly rational response to situations! It can be blamed on the hand life has dealt people. Whereby if bad things happen to people they chose to respond by finding something or someone to blame. The more powerless they feel the more they hate until it becomes an all consuming part of them!

There is no justification for hating someone on the basis of being gay, so I will chalk that up to prejudice. I honestly have 100 better things to worry about than gays getting married, adopting children, etc. I don't think it is unnatural.
As far as treatment goes, between people generally, if you treat people like dirt, don't get up on your high horse and think you can spit on them and they will come along and follow you and be nice. I am polite, considerate and helpful. Don't walk all over me. I admire Americans for their forthrightness and refusal to put up with bad treatment. We worry too much about what others think. I am not saying be mean or aggressive, but why give into bad treatment? These people didn't respect you from the get-go.

Ego-validation, power play and convenience.

Usually it's low self esteem. They feel so terrible about themselves that the only way they know how to make themselves feel more superior is to cut down others and make other feel even worse about themselves than they already do.
