Run the numbers. Let's say your car gets 20 MPG. 40 miles one way means you're burning about 4 gallons a day. If you go 5 days a week (and you only make one trip per day), you're looking at about 23 days per month. That's 92 gallons a month. What's gas cost where you live? Around here, I can usually get a gallon for about $2.50. I'd be looking at $230/month (just for the fuel). Now factor in wear and tear on your vehicle, tires, etc. (say about another $50/month, which is probably on the high side). We're up to $280/month. Can you rent a room close to school for less than $280/month? If so, do that, if not, commute.
Now, if your car is old or not in very good shape, that might bump your monthly cost up. What do you do if your car breaks down? Can you get to school?
Would you be taking public transit? Do a similar cost analysis on that option.
You should also factor in your aggravation factor. :-) How painful will the commute be? Lots of traffic? If you're on public transit, how much of your time will you be spending on the commute and can you use that time (for studying, reading, whatever)?
Are you single? If not, perhaps time with your family is more important. I used to work 40 miles away from home and rode the bus two hours each way every day. This was four more hours away from my family each day. I did this for five years. It sucked.

well i commute to school everyday as well...i only live 15 miles away though. I dont mind it but it does suck in the mornings when you're stuck in traffic forever. Honestly unless you're a morning person who doesnt mind the possibility of morning rush hour traffic, i'd look into an appartment or dorm.

If it's a school you want to go to, and you can't live closer for some reason, then I'd say commute. You'd do the same for a job you wanted, after all.

40 miles isn't too bad. It would be better to not use that much gas. But then if you are getting a good education then go for it.

Yea go for it. I do the excact same thing everyday. But its the University I wanted to go to. And I would much rather drive an hour and a half a day than to go to class all day at a place I didnt like.
