In the United States the term federalist usually applies to
Statesmen and public figures supporting ratification of the proposed Constitution of the United States between 1787 and 1789. The Federalists supported a strong central government under the US Constitution. The Anti-Federalists opposed a strong central government and supported a government based upon the Articles of Confederation. They wanted power in the hands of the states, and not the federal government.
