Physics states that every body in this universe tends to have minimum energy state .for this body must have minimum surface area like sphere . our earth is oval which can roughly considered as sphere . Now lets hav a look on how earth was formed .As we all know that nebula gave rise to earth all the rotating mass of gases collected ,compressed and coagulated to form planets , moons and our big ol' pal ,sun.! earth had speed initialy when it was formed! . but due large gravitational force of sun it started revolving around sun ., ! earth 's inner core , which is very dense , also had its gravitational fielld attracting its crust .! to overcome the collapse due to this force eath started rotating movement around its own axis so that centripetal force balances gravitational force !. this rotatory motion also added stability to its spherical shape! if earth would have any other shape its moment of inertia woul be greater ( sphere has 0.4 which is minimum) than that of earth , and earth would be losing its its energy and finally dropped in the sun as electrons did in rutherford's model .

OOhh, earth is like a bubble spinning in space that cooled off and found a nice crust like a pie. Don't listen to the brainiacs spouting knowledge from rote. It is round because it spins and it spins because it is round. The gravity of the sun pulls in even increments as it goes around on its axis to make it that nice round shape. The moon asserts a pull to, so it is not perfectly round. You see this most obviously in the tides, but all matter on earth is being affected the same way. I wonder if you have noticed that everything in space seems to be round? It is because everything is LAZY and the most efficient shape to take is that of a circle, but being the 3D creatures we are, we go with the sphere. The qestion the brainiacs should be asking is WHY is a sphere the laziest form a heavenly body can take? It has to do with the curvature of space. The more mass an object attains, the more it curves space around it. The heavier small objects spin faster because of centripetal forces like an ice skater folding her arms as she spins. The more an object dominates its particular piece of real estate in space, the rounder it is allowed to be. Like I said, the earth is pulled on by the moon and sun, so it is a little off, but not enough to interrupt its spinnig motion, which would have disastrous effects for us all.

But the Earth is not round, only to the Flat Earth Society. Round is two-dimensional and the Earth is three-dimensional. The Earth is an oblate spheroid since it is flattened at the poles and it bulges at the equator.

The EARTH is round because if it were flat it would cause too much wind resistance and we'd fly off.

at initial formationof earth it was a bulky lump of molten matter so because of surface tension of liquids nd because of gravity. nd i may tell u that it is not perfectly round it is a bit a oval in shape.

gravity,,,,, everything is pulled to the center and ends up a ball spinning thru space around the sun . Or the world just sucks either will work.
