In Michigan, we just abolished Affirmative Action, which means that you don't get ahead because you're a woman or because you're a minority anymore. You actually get ahead because of your qualifications, not because you fit the right statistic.
This is important for the huge schools like U of M or MSU who have to turn students away left and right because of the admissions restrictions.
You could write about your views on why (or at least I think) that women won't be affected nearly as bad as they would have been 10 years ago if the same law was abolished...

Nancy Pelosi has just become the first female Speaker of the House. This puts her next in line to be President of the US behind Cheney. THAT makes her arguable the most powerful woman in the world.

Level of importance depends on where you are and how relevant the issue is in your place. A good gender issue is something debatable and should consider many aspects.

How divorce is stacked against the male. How the Gay woman is destroying femininity. How the gay women choose who will be the male and which the female in their relationship. Men do the same thing.
