Don't be scared! It is important to see a doctor when you reach this stage in your life! The doctor should do a pelvic exam. They aren't the most pleasant thing ever, but the dr. should talk you through it and do everything they can to make it comfortable for you. You will lay back in stirrups with your butt on the edge of the examing table. There will be gentle pressure when the dr. inserts a speculum, it's a metal or plastic device that opens you up (gently!) for the dr. to examine your cervix. They generally do a pap smear, in which they take a cotton swap (a long Q-tip) to take a sample from your cervix. I usually get a small cramp when they do this, it's quick and goes away right away.

The doctor should speak to you about whether or not you're sexually active (glad to hear your not, keep it up!) and talk to you about doing home breast exams. He or she should do a breast exam on you, they gently push on the breast, in a circular motion, to check for abnormal masses. They should show you how to do it yourself monthly.

I don't know anyone who looks forward to going to the doctor for these checkups, but it is a very important thing for your health. Starting with it now is the best insurance to have a healthy body for your life.

Many woman have irregular periods for their entire lives. Sometimes there are problems causing this (thyroid issues, endometriosis, hormone levels, just to name a few), sometimes it's just the way your body works. Things may be able to be done to make you more regular (going on birth control pills), but the doctor may think it's best just to wait and see if things level out with time.

Relax, try to think pleasant thoughts, and remember, it will all be over quickly and and you will be able to rest easier getting a clean bill of health!

I'm guessing but i bet your about 12-16. this can scary, the import thing is relax he or she will more then likely do pelvic examination and maybe an ultra sound. during a pelvic the doc will have nurse on hand to help. most doc will let your mom come with you but is only if you want her there. neither of witch feel great but neither should hurt the point that will make you cry. if at anytime something does hurt speak up. the most important thing is that you try to relax and answer all the questions honesty your doc will not judge you. not sure if your worried about this but i was my 1st time if i would still be a virgin after and the answer is yes. a side note wear some good thick socks and keep them on. those metal stirrups are cold.

First of all, remember this is YOUR body and if something hurts you speak up. I assume you are going to see a gynecologist? Make sure you are because a regular GP is worthless in these cases.

I have had problems all my life since I started at age 11! Finally found a good GYN and she put me on medroxyprogesterone.. Long word, but I thank the pill gods for this one!

I have a regular period, on time every month since starting on this medication about 8 years ago. I take it for 10 days each month, my period starts almost immediately after I stop the med at 10 days. And My period lasts 2-3 days, and I mostly just spot.

My advice is to ask for that drug and NOT take the birth control pill! You have more of a chance of bad side effects with the pill and since you are not having sex yet I think it would be a mistake to take the BC pill..

So ask about trying medroxyprogesterone.

Of course you will have a vaginal exam done first, make sure to tell them to you the small speculum and tell them you are a virgin before they even start! It is weird, an uncomfortable but there is nothing to be afraid of..

Maybe you can come back and give us an update? You can email me too if you want. I know what your going through, as many women do these days.

Good luck, and try to relax!
Blessings

They will likely do a pelvic examination (which doesn't hurt, just relax!) to feel for abnormalities.

Then they will also maybe do blood tests to check your hormone levels. The treatment will likely be birth control pills.

But for sure push them to find out what's causing the irregularity first. If they just push the birth control pills without seeing what's wrong, then that is just masking the problem. Later on, you will get off the Pill, and your periods will go right back to being irregular.

I don't mean to laugh at you for being scared that your pregnant when you're a virgin, but that is really funny. Some girls have it engrained into their brain from an early age that getting pregnant is horrible and the worst thing that they can do, in an effort to divert them from having sex at all cost. The sad thing is, a lot of these girls hold on to those feelings about sex even as adults, so even when they are married they still feel bad about having sex and especially unprotected sex. Some are even afraid of sperm, as in they are scared to touch it or have it on them, the way people with arachnaphobia are afraid of spiders. It's really quite sad. You have to be careful of not only what you teach your children, but how you teach them.

As far as going to the doctor, just realize that MILLIONS of women have gone to the doctor for the same problem. It can't be horrific, they all come out alive and in one piece lol. They often prescribe birth control strictly as a means of regulating an irregular period, even if you're not sexually active. So that might help ease your fear about being pregnant, even though you're a virgin, lol.

He will probably just do a regular internal exam to make sure there is nothing abnormal inside. And if that is fine, he might put you on birth control pills to help regulate you. It is nothing to worry about sweetie. Try to relax...it doesnt take a tremendous amount of time...and remember...this is embarrassing for you...but he is a doctor...this is what he does all day...you are nothing new to him. Just another person he would like to help if he can. Good luck! ...p.s. irregular periods is not unusual...mine didnt regulate until after I had my kids.

Trust me...i was scared to death after I talked to all of these women that had been to the "girl doctor" before me.They put crazy ideas in my head about what would happen, but they were all wrong. It is very simple and fast.It is non-painful and if you find a woman doctor, you will feel more comfortable.Tell her you are a virgin because I was the first three times I went to her and she used smaller insrtuments. They ask you to undress and you get on the table. They ask you to lie back and they put your feet up.They insert a "speculum" and none of this is painful. It is a little uncomfortable, but they do this 50 times a day and with girls much younger.Don't worry.everything will be fine.

more than likely you'll get a pelvic exam.....dont worry its not that bad. honestly!!! when they do it they will put an instrument into u and open it up (like an alligator mouth) and take a swab (long Q-tip) of the inside of your cervix and thats about it then the dr will probably put u on birth control to regulate your periods!
honestly it doesnt hurt, its not a great feeling but its not bad!
your mom can go back with you if u want her to.
i went to the dr to get put on birth control before i had sex and thats what they did to me.
hope this helps and remember DONT STRESS OVER IT!!!

First, sperm can't fly, you have to have sex to be pregnant so don't stress about that. Second irregular periods are not uncommon there is plenty of treatment available out there for them. The doctor is likely to give you medication to help sort it out. Don't be scared, it'll be fine.
