My periods usually come every 24 days. It was late in Sept, on time in Oct, late in Nov (actually didn't start till Dec 1) and now it's like 4 weeks late. I took a home pregnancy test last week and it was negative. Is it possible that menopause can start so abruptly? Or should I expect to have another period, just not knowing when?

Yes, you can be pre-menopausal at 47. It is totally normal for your period to decrease in length and flow. And yes even miss one or two months then start again. You're not fully in menopause until you've not had a period for one full year. I've been dealing with this for a few years now! Welcome to the club and don't throw your tampons out yet!

As we age, our periods start becoming more irregular. It's probably not an abrubt start to menapause, just the beginning. A late or early period, a skipped period now and then, until it eventually stops.

A blood test can tell where you stand, and other reasons for menstrual irregularities should also be explored, so it's time for a trip to the dr. Your health needs also change when you begin menapause, so it's important to speak with a doctor about those changes. There may be changes in your body you never even knew about, my mom developed asthma along with menapause, apparently it's not uncommon, but she's even a nurse and had no idea the two could be related!

It's also a good time to discuss things like bone density, cholesteral, blood pressure, the pros and cons of estrogen replacement, and any other concerns you may have.

The terrible cramps and bleeding were probably a miscarriage, and she probably was only 3-4wks pregnant which isn't that far along, and it's very normal to miscarry. It is normal to spot and have light cramps but it's not normal to have terrible cramping and actually bleed. She needs to tell her mom immediately so she can go to the doc or ER. If she didn't miscarry she's pregnant if she did, which is probably what happened since the test now reads negative she needs to be checked out by a doc. to prevent infection. 4 test wouldn't give her false positives but one test could give a false negative....

It's not that unusual for periods to start to become irregular and less frequent in your late forties. This can carry on for many years. The funny thing about menopause is you don't know which period is your last.

Hi,

Wait for the period it might have delayed because of some other reasons.
Menopause happens to all women at the age 45 to 50 years and cannot be prevented. The bad effects can be minimized by hormone replacement therapy

There was a case of a man having menopause at the age of 20. So it can happen. To be sure you should go see a doctor, also your pregnancy test could very well be wrong.

Menopause. When you ask the doctor about it he/she will tell you it's perfectly normal for it to start this early. Menopause can last for a long time, it doesn't mean you're old.

Sounds like menopause to me, but check with your doc to be sure everything is normal. Also, note if you are having other menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, trouble sleeping, mood swings, etc.).
