If he is of average size for 5 ,I would start hin on the Honda CRF 50. It is a 4 cycle, (regular gas), three speed with no clutch. It has a throttle governor that you can set to restrict the speed untill he is ready for more. This is a low maintenance, buletproof little bike that has been around for 40 years in one form or another. They are $1299 plus tax and off road licence for an 07 model. They depreciate about a hundred bucks a year, so an 03 is usuallly about $1000. The earlier modesl were the Z-50, and XR50, same bike minor changes. Any one of these will work great. Dont buy the Chinese rip offs, they wont hold up and the kids get upset when their bike is always broken down. Yamaha has a copy of the Honda called a TTR50, a good bike also, but the Honda has been around a lot longer and has better resale. After the fifty, he will move up to a CRF70, or a CRF80, then if he wants to race, the new standard is the CRF150R, for racing. The two strokes are going away this year, and next,, so I would not waste money on a 85 class for racing. Start small, build some skill and confidence. Good luck.

to me it all bepends on his riding skills right now and if he is tall enough for a 80 dirt bike or not but i wont recommand something that would get him hurt so the best bet for a year or so would be 65 make doesnt matter but he will outgrow this in a year or so best advise is to take him to some dealers and let him sit on a few and see how he sits in the saddle on them if he is comfortable can he reach the ground the suspension can be adjusted for him by a mechanic also get him into a riding school that teaches him proper cornering and rider position becouse if he is going to race he needes to know those things as well as buying him all i say again all of the riding gear ie chest protector pants jersey gloves helment goggles kidney belt and boots if you do this it will give you a little peace of mind knowing that he is safe as possible out there on it just go and look check out sites such as suzuki.com yamaha.com honda.com kawasaki.com ktm.com they could also help you in your selection process too

dirt motorcycle!!! i began out at 3 without preparation wheels on a pw50. identity say any age 5 and under could be stable for a toddler to start using. definately initiate with a dirt motorcycle, a quad teaches u no longer something for my area and that i hate them (definite I even have ridden a million). im guessing u think of a quad may be safer, yet a 4 wheeler ought to turn over and ur toddler get caught under it, 4 wheelers roll and dirt motorcycles in basic terms fall over, or slide slightly.

Here is your answer A stock 50. Trust me I am mom with 2 kids that race and you dont want them to start on anything bigger. a stok 50 hac plenty of power and yet the smallest. I have one that i have made it into a 125 cc it is 11 horsepwer and I race it. you can allways modify them to go faster if you think he is ready for more power but a stock 50 is the place to start for sure.
good luck I hope he loves it.

well, i think you can find all the answers on the net. but i would personally suggest a honda chally. 50cc, very low and easy to control. i personally learned on a simillar bike when i was 5. dont start with a dirt bike before he absolutely masters the chally.
you can get me via email for more info.. sascha@eureka.lk

check out a honda 50cc. It's perfect for young beginners. It doesn't go too fast, so you don't have to clench your teeth every time he goes out, and they are light, so if he dumps it, odds are he won't hurt himself, aside from the usual scrapes that are a part of riding. When he gets used to it, upgrade him to an 80cc
it has gears, and it goes a little faster, but it still won't kill him if he's riding like a savage.
