download a program called winrar to uncompress the file and then you will be able to play it

You cannot play .rar files directly. The file is actually zipped using winrar and so has the extension .rar.
winrar is like winzip, which is used to compress files.
Just download winrar and install in you computer. Now right click the fiel and extract it. Now you will get the actual file and you can play it.

Stuffit Expander (the free version of Stuffit) can extract .rar files, but not create them. I'm not sure it that's what you meant by 'play .rar files' or not.
