Its amazing to me that you are a teacher. What happened to educators promoting creativity and diversity? So what if you have to work a little harder to pronounce a name? You should be ashamed of yourself. My question to you is why would anyone want more Sarahs and more Michaels? There are two many as it is. I agree that some names that I have heard out there are a bit on the strange side. They make you think "Why would you ever do that to your child?". But is it your place to complain or even comment on it? No. I firmly believe in expressing ones opinions but not when it is mean to simply bash a group of children with different names or the mothers that named the.
Please start concentrating on teaching these young children how to read, spell & use their imaginations to be everything and anything they want to be. Teach them that there is something more out there then what's beyond their probably troubled neighborhood.
As an ex teacher I was shocked by your post. As a woman now in the business world I am terrified by it. Keep an open mind and open heart.

I understand where your coming from, i have dyslexia, so being able to read common names is nice as i'm able read to them.
However i hate the names that everyone else has, they are boring and orginal and too many people have them, i like being able to mention someone with out having to explain which David or Mark or Sarah that i am talking about. Some spelling of names i agree are very weird, however i like spelling Sarah without an H or leaving a letter out of a name. Granted i don't change it so the name is unreadable.
I don't like the idea of naming a child after someone, i think a child should be allowed to be different from birth.
I think if the parents like a name then hey, who cares. A name is a name and at the end of the day, who cares what their name is, its who we are as people that counts. One may get teased coz of their name or annoyed coz others can't prounce it. However these are simple lessons we all have to learn to deal with in life at some point.
There are more important things in the world that you should focus on, rather than your own insecurities about prouncing names correctly. Afterall as a teacher aren't you meant to teach the kids that mistakes are ok? and that you need to make them so you can learn?
What i am getting from you is you want people to conform, not a good lesson to teach your kids. Go with the follow and don't let this get to you. Teach your kids "It's OK to be different"

well, i think new and unique is great. back in the old days did u enjoy saying michael and five kids say "what". or call out jennifer and six girls say "what". did u enjoy having to use both first and last names because there was 6 other kids in the class with the same first name.
its really not that hard to ask for a pronunciation. i like the fact that names are so unique.
the name Asholee spelled a s s h o l e cracked me up, thats a bit overboard. i do think their is a fine line between unique and stupid.

My name is a noun (like Epiphany or River etc...) and I have never met someone with the same name.
Although I like classic names like Shannon, Holly, Charles, Laird etc..... I would not trade my name.
I was once hired (a promotion too) by someone so intrigued by my name he said he had decided to hire me on my resume alone.
Bottom line, if it is unique but spelled in a sensible manner, I think it is fine.
I don't like names that are contorted i.e.
Cynthia becomes, Syntheia'a
That is just cursing a child.

As a teacher, you should be embracing individuality, not condemming it. Why do you think kids are bullied? People can either be admired or shunned for their differences. You say that the names should be found in the top 1000, that means that there would only be 1000 different names in the world, would that not be boring? This is either a case of conformity, or just, (like some older people reluctant to use technology) failure to be open to new ideas and advances.
It is silly that celebrities want to call their names that are 'cool,' but is it so bad that people want their kids to have an individual identity?

you realize that the population of the united states is approx. 300 million. if people were to chose from a top 1000 list. that is one name per 300,000 people. now think about seattle. approx 600,000 people. sarah and michael would be the only 2 names you would get to have.
there are many cultures in this country, many backgrounds. why do you assume that the names are "creative," being made up? more and more people are reaching back in their history. choosing names of signifigance from their heritage. just because there arent 40 kids in your school that share the name doesnt mean it hasnt been around since the beginning of time.
you cant expect everyone to chose white biblical names like michael and sarah, as not everyone is a white christian.

I think its the person choice what they name their child, with consideration of the child and how the child will feel about having the name they chose being attached to for the rest of its life

I just had to laugh when I read your question!
I used to work as a medical secretary in a pediatrics office. I took a call from a new mom that wanted to schedule the baby for an appointment. I asked what the baby's name was and she replied, "A-shol-lee". When I asked her to spell it, she said, "a-s-s-h-o-l-e." I almost died! She said that she made the name up. Um, really? I wonder if she even realized that her poor daughter would go through life being an a*shole?
