Let me start by saying that I really hope that I'm totally wrong on this, but this is my response to your questions - in order:

(1) Well yes, except if he should have listened to his General, (rather than a bunch of ideologs who never been in the military, let alone in a war) and done this right in the beginning. It's just too late to be really effective.
(2) I hope it does but I'm afraid it won't.
(3) It just more of the same, except now it's just A LOT more.

Another reason for my pessimism is this: Before you can come up with a solution, you must first completely understand the problem, and I'm afraid that this administration is STILL clueless. As a historian said recently on C-SPAN 2: This country has always looked at the midddle east like they are looking in a mirror (as if these people think like us in every way. They are a totally different culture, and we have been too arrogant to try and understand their culture.

In a minor way, I can relate. I was with the US Army in Germany during the cold war and was discouraged to see how the US military made no effort to explain the German culture to the US troops out there. The result was that many Germans had the most bizarre ideas about Americans and the US. (I speak German so I could talk to quite a few of them, trying to explain America to these very confused Germans.) The Arab culture is even farther removed from our way of thinking, and also even more diverse than that of the Germans. Apparently we don't get it.

No,it wont work.These people believe deeply in the tenets of Islam.Islam says that the west (that's us) is decadent,and despicable.It really should give the politicians in Washington pause to realize the fact that these people are quite willing to die for what they believe,even more willing if they can take an infidel with them.We cannot win a guerilla war on someone elses soil.Why? Because there are only two ways to win that type of conflict.One,find them,and kill them.All of them.We wont do this,we CANT do that politically.We have tied our own hands,scorched earth is not an option.Two,negotiate with the Terrorists.They however cannot make peace with the enemies of Allah,so that would come to nothing.If it did bring peace,it would only be for a short while,not even long enough to pull our troops out.In a way I am ashamed at our leaders stupidity.These people have been fighting and killing each other for centuries.Indeed they were doing just that before the US was even born.Why do we feel that we can give democracy to a people who dont want it? If the people of Iraq really wanted to be rid of Saddam they would have risen in revolt,and shot him,the same way our forefathers rose against a despot king in England.I have said it before,and I will say it again.It is one faction against another over there,and the ironic thing is BOTH sides hate us.
