bag she was carrying. She didn't seem to notice so I parked, picked it up and caught up with her. She was talking on her cellphone and, not wanting to disturb her, I patiently waited for her conversation to be over.
It didn't immediately register when I heard her say 'Just a minute. There's some pervert here I've got to get rid of.' As I started to look around to see who she was talking about I got Maced.
I stumbled back to my car and got out of there.
Apparently she wrote down my plate number because the cops showed up the next day to talk to me. I told my story and they seemed happy. I wasn't arrested. When they asked me if I still had the purse I told them I had dropped it. That wasn't true. I still had it. I still do.
I'm of the opinion that if she wants it back the woman needs to come to me and apologize for being a trigger happy *****. My wife says I should give it back without any conditions. All I want is an apology. Its not like I'm asking for anything excessive
Who is right

There's no right answer of course, but there is a proper course of action. Call her, tell her exactly what happened and tell her she can have her purse back. I'm sure you'll get an apology during the conversation, and if you don't, well that's one more star on your karma wheel, and one less for her.
Think of it this way, if you were a vulnerable woman with some guy hanging around -- even an incredibly handsome one like you -- wouldn't you want to protect yourself? I agree that spraying someone with mace is overreacting, but you don't know her story. She may have been attacked in a similar way in the past, and you triggered some real fear in her.
I'd say follow through on being the good guy you intended to be, and you'll get your reward, one way or another. Hey, maybe it will come from your wife!

If everything happened just like that, that is really shitty. I am sorry you got **** on for trying to do something nice. I don't know how you can return the purse and get an apology. Maybe you could return the purse with a note saying she should maybe think about it before she sprays anyone.

Question: If you were just standing there why did she mace you? If you were maced and leaving, why did she feel the need to call the police? Why didn't you say "Hey crazy b**ch! I am just returning your purse!

The circumstances you relayed don't really add up - if you had ever been maced, you would know that you wouldn't have been able to just drive away; I doubt a woman would have felt so afraid that she would mace her threat, yet then follow him back to his car; the cops would not have waited until the next day to show up at your door; and when they did show up, they would have broached the subject of pressing charges against your assailant (the mace-happy woman).

I read your other questions and answers, and this looks like just one more prank of yours. I guess we'll title this one "The Story of the Wronged Nice Guy Seeking Vindication". A little more research next time and you'll be better able to pull it off.

If it had actually happened, you would get an attorney, have criminal charges and a civil suit filed (against her and the college), and return the purse and its contents, intact, in the process.

Sorry, but I agree with your wife. You are doing something against the law. How long have you had the purse? She has probably already called the credit card companies, etc. If her wallet was in the purse she had a lot of junk to call and change.

You really cannot blame the woman with all the nuts that are out there. You should have yelled out to her while swinging her purse in the air to alert her as to what you wanted her for. She does not owe you anything, let alone an apology. She will really be hot if you contact her now and tell her you still have the purse..........
Fine mess you got yourself into..................

You were misunderstood, and the woman was trigger happy. However, in this instance you should have said, Excuse me, you dropped your purse. She misunderstood your silence and in this age of dishonest, surly street people, you are lucky that is all she did. You owe her an apology for having created an awkward and suspicious situation. Yes, in the cold "black and white" your intention was not evil, but it was an unwise way to handle the situation. Please give her back her purse. By the way, isn't lying to an officer a crime? You are not the winner here. Listen to your wife.

C'mon you are acting exactly like her. You have to understand why she reacted like that. Now days with so many rapist and men who are preying college kids, it is a normal reaction. She's not Dionne Warwick to read your mind and knowing what you were doing there meanwhile she was in the phone. Why you didn't tell her immediately? That's why she became suspicious of you. This is not a matter of who is right. Why she needs to apologize? What if instead to be you, was a sexual predator? Good for her and you should return her purse without conditions. In my opinion she did the right thing, instead to be one more statistic. Safety first!!

The woman created the conditions whereby she is of the mind that the world and everyone in it revolves around her. She is of a low mind. You stooped to her level temporarily when you lied about having the purse, thereby passing up an opportunity to publicly shame her for her self centered nature. As this post shows, your guilt is a measure of your empathy and you can rest easy knowing you are a good person as long as you still do the right thing. Elevate your mind above your feelings of hurt and resentment and enlightenment is just around the corner. Don't do it for gratitude or thanks. Do it for you.

Yeah if you told the cops you don't have it then you are going to have a problem with ever giving it back to her. Had you told the cops you had it you would have been fine. Just keep it. Not your problem. I'm not saying to use her credit cards or identity or anything, but let her go through the troubke of having to call and cancel them, go to the DMV and get a new license, etc.

But yeah, If she's a real ******, then when she finds out you still have it, you are going to have to deal with the cops again and it won't be good.

It's a shame you didn't go to the cops first....after all SHE did *** ult YOU. I can see her position with all of the crazies out there but from your description she knew how to handle herself...I mean she barely got off of the phone! If your going to carry pepper spray you should know how to handle it, it is a weapon. You can't go around shooting ppl with a gun either. You need to be responsible with these things. You can have it ready, but don't "pull the trigger" until you don't have any other choice! Have a wienie roast with her purse!
