why do they call people who collect things a pack rat?

Some species of rats actually collect stuff for their nests. bottle caps, paper etc. So if you are hoarding old mags, old clothes you will never wear again, broken appliances etc. you would be considered a pack rat. If you can't get into your house because it's so filled with junk you have obsessive compulsive disorder.

Rats go through and collect anything they can to make a nest.

slang..collecting unwanted things & those things are never in use, still clinging to them.

Hoarder or better call them miser
