You want a short answer for a very complicated social, religious, scientific, philospohical, and ecomnomic problem. Okay then.
More Universities meant more people could read - which makes the printing press really valuable as an invention - more copies of literature meant that ideas could cross the continent at much faster speed. ALL Areas of knowledge grew exponentially - because people could build upon ideas that were already thought up of....so many of the explorations were driven by the desire to find out "whats over there" that might have value scientifically (like darwin for example - he went on a boat ride and came home with the theory of evolution) - -
Now, you have to believe me there are a lot of things that went on between 1500 and 1700 that are important - but you wanted the short answer.
In the 1700's, as the result of all these ideas bouncing around Europe, and new advances in science driving philosophical issues (Ethics) a few new concepts came about that were never heard of before in the world - the most important one being "Liberty" - you see, the united States of America as we know it today is the culmination of several hundred years of what went on in Europe because of those very issues that you were asking about.
Really - you are depriving yourself of some wonderful history by trying to use the short answer.
Thats what you might need to know to answer the second part of your question. For the first one I would read Max Webers "The Spirit of Capitolism and the Protestant Work Ethic"
