I have a large bird of paradise bush, similar to a flax, but with beautiful orange flowers, but it has gotten far to big, and is taking over. Is there a safe way I can trim it back without damaging its growth?

If you mean you want to dig a portion of it out it will be fairly difficult as they have very deep roots and very close together. Why not just trim the leaves etc. off at ground level as far back as you want. This should not hurt the bush at all. Good luck.

As to height you can cut it back hard, but it will soon form new leaves that will rapidly get just as large.
As to width, the "taking over" part, it must be dug up and the clump divided. It won't be easy, but it is your only choice.
