NO, under any Indian Matrimonial law no such marriage is valid until & unless the necessary religious ceremony/rites such as Saptapadi i.e. taking of 7 steps before the sacred fire as in Vedic Hindu ceremony or taking of 4 lamas around the holy guru granth sahib in Sikh ceremony is done the marriage simply by garlanding each other will not be sufficient for validating the marriage.

Boy and girl, eloping and going to an old, not in use temple and garlanding each other in front of the idol and thinking that they are now married. This happens in movies. Not in real life. You need a registrar of marriages to witness and sign the document, 2/3 witnesses plug garlanding in the end of course for real marriage to take effect.

If that is the case, then all ministers and movie stars would have committed polygamy!!!
Marriage is went 2 individuals consent to be tied in a union which is binding for life. A vow! Garland or no garland. This maybe the case in case of tribals I am not sure!

Nope... the figure is ELEVEN. And, out of those ten five are form your family, including your parents and five are form the other persons family including its parents. The eleventh person is the pandit who performs the rituals of the marraige. Both of you will have to take up a role in the performance. Once this is over... go and get your marraige registered....

No, I would say not. A marriage has to be performed by a legal Notary such as a Justice of the Peace or a person of the church. I'm sure you could "call" yourself married, but legally no, it won't work!
