she is insisting that I put "CASH GIFTS ONLY" on the invitations. I really think it would be rude since some of the people attending will be women who are basically peons. They work for her mom and do things like make coffee and type things. Secretarial work. Those people can't have any kind of decent money to give, right? So I thought we should put "CASH GIFTS IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, DON'T COME AND JUST PLEASE THROW THIS INVITE AWAY IF YOU CAN'T".
Which of us do you think is correct?

Well, I think that you're right that asking for cash gifts only is kind of rude. I hope you were kidding about the "DON'T COME AND JUST PLEASE THROW THIS INVITE AWAY IF YOU CAN'T" part though, because that sounds even more rude. If there was a good reason she wanted cash gifts , like she has to move soon and wouldn't be able to transport the gifts, something like "Since -- will be moving soon and larger gifts will be hard to transport, we apreatate you bringing gift cards or a modest cash gift only." (Modest would suggest that it doesn't have to be a lot).

i wouldnt come to it either way!
a baby shower is not an event people have to show up to, would u go to a shower if u were insulted by the invitation?? didnt think so!
you could put a little note in with the invitation that says something about the new mom is trying to save up for a specific item...like a crib, changing table, stroller/carseat combo. etc
but she must then go out and get that item!!!!
but its really rude to put on the invitation that she only wants $$
the guests are giving gifts, that they dont have to give, just remember that!!!
