the main difference between them is that in software the programmers intentionally create methods to circumvent security for remote access, etc.

with high speed networking devices the ability to gain access to equipment occurs when either the device was not not secured properly via built in security features, etc. of the inherent nature of any active remote access protocol or service.

* Windows Update has nothing to do with the security problems with the Windows OS. Internet Explorer (IE v6 and earlier) is built into the operating system, it is not a stand alone software interface. This is why Microsoft is testing out Internet Explorer 7 as it is a standalone interface. with Vista released it seems they are finally getting around to secure that platform better.

The only context I'm familiar with regarding back doors, is the technique some programmers use to get into a program bypassing the normal validation. Instead of the normal validation, some special password or sequence of keystrokes allows them access to a program or process that would not otherwise be available.

Back doors are open ports left by programmers, so they can modify the software through a net connection.

Microsoft uses this kind of technology for automatic updates. That's how hackers who write viruses manage to install them on computers via the internet.
