There have been Jews in England since before there WAS an England and they are as English as any other. As for numbers...According to the 2001 numbers there were 267,373 Jews for 0.5% of Population. There were 1,588,890 Muslims for 2.8% Pop. The last number has grown considerably.

David W.S is slightly incorrect about Jews in England. They were, in fact, all ejected by Edward I and were not readmitted until the time of Cromwell. Muslims having been coming to England since the 1960s when immigration started in earnest from the Indian sub-continent. The earlier immigration had been mainly from the West Indies. Why were they let in? The simple answer is that at that time there was unrestricted immigration permitted from all Commonwealth countries. Later Governments had to bring in various forms of restriction as the UK is a small country and it was becoming difficult to absorb uncontrolled numbers of people (of whatever colour or creed)

You refer to England - I should say that Wales has had a small Muslim population in Cardiff for much longer, made up of sailors from the many collier ships that called there.
