I'm really wanting to know, not trying to be sarcastic or silly. So please, no stupid answers. I'm curious as to why areolas and nipples are a different color than the rest of your skin.

The point of the areola beign a different color than your skin is so that when a woman nurses, it is easier for the baby to find the nipple. I read about this in "What to Expect When You're Expecting". I hope this helps.

Note: The information I'm giving below is based on my experience at a radiology clinic. It might not be the same thing at other clinics and/or in other countries. It's just to give you a general idea. How old are you? I work at a clinic where we do mammograms, and I have patients ask me about this sort of thing sometimes. You should go see your family doctor or gynecologist. Even if it's nothing, at least it will give you peace of mind. The doctor will want to examine your breasts. If the doctor has ANY doubt, he will order one of two things: a mammogram (but usually only if you are 35 or older) or an ultrasound (if you are under 35, because ultrasounds do not give off nearly as much radiation as a mammogram, and they want to protect you since you're young). Once the results are in, if there is STILL any doubt, then they will do more testing. For example, if they found a mass (you said you didn't feel anything, so I don't think they would), they might do a biopsy. But please let us know how old you are. If you're under 25, your body is probably still developing, even if you've started your period, so these changes are likely normal and simply a result of that. And do see your doctor, it will make you feel SO much better to have peace of mind :)

Probably because they are not skin. Think about it your lips are a different color than your face, and no one ever ask why.

It's just genetic. Possibly because newborns have poor eyesite and it makes it easier to to identify. That's just a guess.
