I usually am the first to adopt technology..but I have always hated cell phones...it seems as if people ignore simple manners, are loud and rude. I have been forced to listen to peoples personal conversations on the train or in other public places...and besides...its like a big leash...everyone can get to you wherever you are....anyone else feel the same way?
(I know its not the technology, but the way we implement it..but still...)

I hate them too. It's so annoying when you are talking to someone, their cell rings, they answer it and then proceed to have a ten minute conversation while you stand there like an utter lemon. Then, to add insult to injury, they expect still to be able to resume the conversation they were having with you! Grrrrrrrrrrrr...

Also, when I'm on a train, in a cafe or somewhere like that, I really resent those loud cell conversations. Is it so important that it can' t wait? I think not, as most converstaion tend to be about what to have for dinner/to buy when shopping!

Cell phones make people forget their manners.

Phew, I fell better now I've got that off my chest........

I have a cell phone that I rarely use. Then again, I also have a phone at home that I rarely use. ha I'm not a phone person by any means. Hmmm...I honestly don't have any obnoxious cell phone stories. Though, I do think it's odd that people nowadays think they have to be in direct communication with the rest of the world at all times. Most of the time, I want to be left alone, to live inside my own head, which is where I always want to be.

No - I love my phone, usually. It does bug me when people use theirs the way you describe, but as you say, that's the way they use the technology and not the technology itself.

I have mine fixed on one quiet ring only, so it doesn't intrude and I don't feel I have to answer if it doesn't suit me; I have assigned different ringtones for kids (which I would always answer) and everyone else (which I often don't). I often don't hear it ring at all, but can pick up the messages when it suits me.
I do like the fact that I can contact someone quickly, or at least let them know I'm looking for them.
I would always turn my phone to silent before meeting someone, and always before going to public meetings.
I think it's really annoying if someone takes a call in the middle of a meeting with me, but I now just insist on all phones being switched off!
I know for the last year or two that at least one mobile phone has gone off during every funeral I've been at - how the heck could you not remember to switch to silent before going to a funeral?? That strikes me as being rude in the extreme.
It's only a leash if you let it be. On the whole, it gives more freedom than it takes, and I love it!

I completely agree! Cell phones are great to have in case of emergency or occasional need to make a call, but not to be glued to your head 24 hours a day. People take on a whole different attitude when they're on the phone and can be very obnoxious.

Also, I play a little game while I'm driving: every time I encounter a vehicle that's doing so many stupid/illegal things that I think the driver must be drunk, I try to pull up beside it to see if the driver is on a cell phone, or just plastered drunk. It's always a phone.

And those little ones that stay on your ear and look like some gadget from Star Trek really annoy me.

I think you really meant to say that you hate the over-use or mis-use of mobiles- in that case you are right. But I don't hate cell phone as they keep me in touch with relatives abroad. I don't think anyone should be on the phone for long periods of time though as the cell phone is mainly for practical purposes and using only when necessary. The cell phone is a great technology I have to admit that, and I think it is a sign of what lies ahead in the future.

Your not alone, and I also am fast for latest tech... satnav, pdas ect... I had it all years ago. However cell phones do annoy me.

I've never even had a cell/mobile that I've ever been comfortable with... buttons too small or not arranged userfriendly/neatly, awkward display or menu navigation.

For some reason my cell/mobile is my least favorite tech.... although I suspect that will change when next-generation cells can do lots more.... as in full pda, music center, internet full coverage.... but I just hope one firm can get a really good designer to make it... how it should be.

Socially wise.. I hear where your coming from... but I ignore most ppl who are talking rubbish with their phones.

Yes, I do.
They allow people to be late because they think it's acceptable to 'call' you to let you know they're running late, or they'll just be rude and text you.
They are used in restaurants, in the pub, on the train, on the street, at parties, on the bus, and even in theatres once the performance has started.
There is nothing more annoying than talking to someone whose mobile phone is more important than you.
Everything has to stop when their twattish ringtone signals something of huge importance, and then they shrug it off with a comment like 'oh, that was Brad. He's just finished his homework and is off to bed'.
Aaaarrrrgh!

Im not a huge fan of them either , they have crap reception so you cant hear what anyone is saying on the other end and they cost to much and well it gives people an excuse to ring you up 5 mins before meeting them and cancel for example . i much prefer landlines if cell phones had goood reception and were cheap to run i would like them but well at the moment their ****.
