I would highly reccomend learning it. I am currently learning it, and my parents encourage me,a nd tell em that if you know more than one language, you get paid more for jobs. If you are plannign to live or work in a mainly Japanese area, or if you live/plan to live in Japan, I reccomend it. If you decide to do so, you are surely welcome to contact me for help. I've learned alot, and can show you some of the inexpensive and quick ways to learn the language.

If you want to learn Japanese as a hobby, then by all means knock yourself out. However, given current population and economic trends in the country, there isn't a strong future for the language as far as work is concerned. You said "beneficial," so I assume you're looking to use it for work. I speak Japanese almost fluently, and it hasn't helped me find a job, unless working at the Japanese supermarket counts. My suggestion is to study Korean and Chinese -- languages that have a demostrable lack of qualified speakers in the States. Japanese may help you do that, but it probably won't.

It depends on your purpose. If you are coming to Japan, I would say 100% yes. The language will be very helpful. If you are just wanting to know about the Japanese people, it would be more beneficial to study directly about the people and not worry about the language. You would learn a lot of words and phrases just by that type of study.
A study of the Japanese people would really open a window to the eastern way of thought and philosophy.
Good luck.

Having multiple languages keeps your brain healthy, on a physical level.
Why wouldn't learning it be good? Go for it!
But, if you want to study a universal Asian language wouldn't you want top study Mandarin?
