You have a bunch of great answers here. I agree that it was a great album, and - in my humble opinion - the best BB album. It was highly influential with other rock musicians, particularly those on the cutting edge (Beatles, Stones, etc.). But its was not highly regarded by the public. It was not a big seller for them, probably because the standard BB fan back then wanted surfer music - cars and girls - and this departed from the standard 1-4-5 chord patterns of that genre. In fact, even the other Beach Boys didn't care for the direction Brian was heading. Over time, it has become more recognized for it's beauty and vision.

Soooo,,, it was influential to other musicians, especially the Beatles, but it had little impact on the public.

It's really more a Brian Wilson album then a Beach Boys album. The Rolling Stones personally paid for advertising for the album in the NY times. That tells you something. Their peers thought it was an incredible and influential piece of music. 40 years later we're still talking about it. 40 years later it's still being referenced by other bands (like The Beta Band).

I have read a lot of sites and opinions that Pet Sounds was the BB's magnum opus, and that it proved influential on the Beatle's Sgt. Pepper's.

I have to say, however, that in my opinion there were other works that have proven to be far more influential (at least directly) than Pet Sounds, like the entire later catalog of the Beatles.

My vote (and sorry, I know this may fire up the BB lovers) is that PS was a very strong, influential album, but not nearly as singular an influence as the Beatles, Led Zep, James Brown and others were.

Best to you.

Aside from being a great f-ing album, it inspired the creation of the ultimate rock album: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles response to Pet Sounds. THAT is hands down it's greatest impact.

Pet Sounds BTW was a response to Revolver.

My favorite Beach Boys song of all time "God Only Knows" is on that album, so I must say it was a HUGE impact.

Brian Wilson wrote beautiful amazing harmonies and songs like 'God Only Knows' were emotionally open and real for the time.
