First of all; there is NO SUCH THING AS A BIG BLOCK PONTIAC. Every Pontiac from the 326-455 has the same external dimensions. The 301 dosent count!
The #1 piston on a '68 400 is on the drivers side of the engine in the very front.

It depends on what piston rings were used. Moly or chrome rings reguire 10k miles to break in, and std rings are 5k miles. If your not sure on estimated miles are above 5K, I would drive it 5k miles using 10-30w regular oil. Then after that, you can change to 10-40 full synthetic. No need to use the thicker oils cause it has new parts in it. If it was an old motor then 20-50 would be ok cause the tolerances would be larger. But since its new, the tolerances are close right now and you want to use thinner than 20w oils. If it stays under 50deg outside where you are at you can use 5-30w, but if its hotter than 60deg outside, 10-40 would be ok. Kinda just have to go off experience, I work on cars of all types. I have a 72 Chevy Luv with a 283ci V8 and its old so I use 20-50.

front drivers side. and no there are no small block or big block pontiacs. if you are doing a cam swap be careful. you dont have a small block chevy. the timing marks on the cam and crank need to be straight up. if you would rather set it up so that the crank mark is at 12 o clock and the cam at 6 o clock, set number 6 at top dead center. i ran into this problem when i did a cam swap on my 67 lemans.

Hello,

Left side (driver's side) 1st piston closest to the radiator.

And for a heads up...no such thing as a "BIG BLOCK" when it comes to Pontiac engines. They have 3" & 3.25" journals and all stock connecting rods are 6.625" in length.

It's the piston towards the front of the car on the drivers side.

The numbers alternate from side to side from that point (#2 is on the front passenger side)
