Macs are awesome machines. They've got everything you need or could possibly need. The only draw back is their price. I would install a Windows OS on it and run multpile programs designed for windows on it and just get a two buttoned mouse.
Sony is the only laptop manufacturer that I know of that makes laptops for looks, which is good if you like looks, but bad if you actually care about what your computer does. They tend to be just expensive when compared to computers that are equally equipped.

I have always used PCs, but I just switched to the middle white macbook model, and I love it. I am looking for a new MP3 players, and my options are basically ipods or ipods, but besides this, I really like it. As for looks, dell has some good laptops which look nice. I agree, most PC laptops look terrible. Hope this helps!
In response to the person who said that macs come with no software: every mac sold now comes with all the ilife programs. Add neo-office (free word processing) and a bit more freeware, and you will be fine. A far cry from spending $300 or something for Office for windows.

Hi.
If you do ever chnge your mind to buying a Mac, dont get the MacBook as it overheats way too much. MacBook Pro is way better. It is better engineered, more stuff, and all.
But from PC ones, I would suggest an HP Pavillion. Pick any one, you'll get one at a descent price.
Any HP Laptop with these specs or better is worth it. Plus - you wont have to spend a fortune on it.
- 1 gigabyte RAM.
-any video and sound card.
-120 gigabytes Hard Drive.
-2.2 Giga Hertz (GHz) Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
-DVD drive.
-4 USB ports (its very useful, and many HP Pavillion Laptops have them (4)
They look OK. You can add a skin to it, however. Anyway, you will need a notebook mouse too, as no touchpad can satisfy the average consumer.
My suggestions for mice (non-notebook, but will be good with notebook)-
Logitech media
Logitech Wireless Laser GX 5 (they look cool and perform well).
Notebook mice-
Microsoft Comfort Optical 3000 Notebook mouse.
Or any Logitech notebook mouse (trust me, they rule.)
Buying a keyboard/external display is up to you.
Make sure it has Windows Vista Home Premium (at least) installed in it. Home Basic sucks.
For that, you need to wait till 30th Jan, when Vista will be launched.

I don't know about a PC, but I can give you something to think about with the MAC. I have a MAC and I love using it. These are the problems:
1. Doesn't come with any programs...NONE
2. Some websites and programs don't cater to a MAC
3. If you want to add anything to your MAC, ie, webcam or external CD/DVD burner, you can only purchase from MAC, otherwise it isn't compatable and is VERY expensive.
I'm a graphic designer so a MAC is perfect for me. But if you are just wanting a personal computer for school, bills, etc, I'd go for a PC, you'll have less problems.

if you really want something for the looks, its either sony, alienware, or mac. alienware is way too pricy though, and mac and sony are close inn price, so i would start there
