Hi Tarah,

Asphalt is a tar based product, and is VERY heavy.
You don't say how large an area you need to pave, so just some generalities about asphalt paving.

Asphalt, to be laid and stay, takes preparation of the surface it is going on. An aggregate /soil base must be laid, leveled for grade, or slope, and then compacted. Special machines are used to accomplish this stage, and it is vital for anything but a small patch. The compacted surface is as hard as rock, when properly prepped.

Asphalt must be HOT to lay and adhere to itself and the surface.
once agai, special machines are used to heat the asphalt as it is being laid, and they both heat and spread the asphalt in one step.
Then we're back to compacting and leveling again, and more specialized machines.

If you have more than a small pothole or crack in existing asphalt paving, you won't be able to do this yourself, but don't feel bad, neither can anyone else who isn't a paving contractor or has one as a best frend.....

You don't just get asphalt, & lay it.
Once it has been made it has to be kept hot (I don't know the exact temperature, but it's freakin'hot) until it's applied, or spread out. Once it has been spread out, it needs to be rolled over with a heavy roller if you want to have a smooth hard surface.

I also live in Ontario Canada, & it's the middle of winter here. You can't apply any asphalt if the outside air temperature is below freezing, and/or if the ground is frozen. So you won't be laying any asphalt until next spring anyway.

I suggest that you contact a professional asphalt paver. It's not an easy do-it-yourself project, & requires a lot of specialized heavy equipment to do properly.
