1/3 = .33
.33(100%) = 33.33% So just think that the store is taking 33.33% off.
So Take 900 multiply it by 33.33% which gives you
900(1/3) = 300
then take 300 and subtract it from 900
900 - 300 = 600
now the coat is for $600 and then the store take another 33.333% off so you take 600 and multiply it with 33.333%
600(1/3) = 200
take 200 and subtract it from 600 and you get
600 - 200 = 400
So the final price of the coat is $400.

If it takes 1/3 off its taking 1/3 of 900 off. Of means multiply so 1/3 of 900 is 1/3 x 900 which is 300. So 300 is coming off of 900 leaving 600. Now 1/3 of 600 is 200. So taking 200 off of 600 leaves 400.

Easier way to think about it is they are taking 1/3 off so the price of the suit is 2/3 (1-1/3) of the price. So 2/3 of 900 is 600. And 2/3 of 600 is 400.

The price of a suit that has had 1/3 take off it would be

(2/3)(900)

(This means that 2/3 of the price is taken, if 1/3 of the price has been taken off).

If an additional 1/3 of the new price is taken off, that means we retain 2/3 of the NEW price. That is, we have

(2/3) [(2/3)(900)]

We can reduce this to

[4/9] [900]

Which is equal to

3600/9 = 400

1/3 of 900=300 off so 1/3 x 900/1 = 900/3 = 300
900 - 300 = 600 900 - 300 = 600
1/3 of 600 =200 1/3 x 600/1 = 600/3 = 200
600-200=400 600 - 200=400
$400 price of suit

1/3 * $900 = $300. So the first discount was to $900 - $300 = $600.

1/3 * $600 = $200. So the final price is $600 - $200 = $400.

Basically it would look like this:

900 X 1/3 X 1/3 = ?

We can combine the two 1/3, which would give us 1/9

So it would be come 900 X 1/9

Which is the same thing as 900 / 9

So the final answer is 100

900*1/3 = 300
so, 900-300 = 600

then take another 1/3 off...
600*1/3 = 200
so, 600-200 = 400

and $400 is your final price

900/1 times1/3 = 900/3 = 300/1 = 300
price of suit x discount = discount amount of suit
900 - 300 = 600
original price less 1/3 discount = suit sale price

repeat formula with suit sale price to get the extra-discounted sale price.
...
600-200=400

900 reduced 33% = 600 new price

600 reduced 33% = 400 new price

final price is 400 or 56% of original price

(((900*2)/3)*2)/3=400

2*2=4
- - - = 4/9 = 44% reduction or 900*4/9 = 400
3*3=9
