Esp since kids play, why doesn't that enthusiasm translate into interest in professional soccer when they grow up?

Quite simple

Americans are used to their sport in short bursts and can't cope with a sport that doesn't take a break for 45 minutes.

Well many are saying that their reasons were because of the aesthetics of the sport. They're correct. But let me share my thoughts:

I think it's because of the economic nature of the sport. I, mean the business side. Soccer is not widely supported because it doesn't generate enough financial back-up. Mainly because soccer is played continuously which doesn't give a chance for advertising when it is broadcast on media. This contradicts to the economic laws that mainly governs the United States in which money/profit is generated through advertisement and sponsorship of commercial companies. Therefore, to make soccer more economically and commercially competitive the companies and the way "media economics" must be the one to adjust. They must do something innovative in order to advertise in spite of the "nonstop" nature of the game. If it is able to adjust then soccer will be broadcast more frequently and will gain more exposure which will generate more interest to the public and more importantly the flow of cash will continue.

I think this is the main challenge. It's a corporate/business/economic problem.[

Yea the term "soccer mom". I think the reason soccer isnt as popular in the US compared to the rest of the world because of many reasons(lots have been mentioned some havent)
1. Lack of timeouts, stoppages in play to allow for ads
When kids grow up, they emulate what they see on TV so if soccer isnt shown as much as other sports, kids will lose interest in it unless they were brought up(like me) from a culture where the sport is a religion
2. Lack of scoring(to some degree).
3. Acting, flopping, diving: Americans like em tough and dont like manipulation of the refs to get a call
I do think dives should become reds to discourage dives
4. Lack of scoring
5. Less emphasis on the individual, more emphasis on the team compared o other US team sports
6. Lack of a high quality domestic league
7. No cheerleaders.. haha
8.. Viewed as a foreign sport
9. Only the goalie gets to use his hands except when throwing the ball in from out of bounds

The majority of Americans don't like soccer b/c Americans don't see their national team win a world cup or have talent and get beaten by european nations but I don't know if you notice after the 2002 world cup america has gotten attention from the world and I believe that now some americans are starting to see that and in the news even though the americans play like crap in the 2006 world cup people still saw why america isn't an easy team now (I'm refering to that italy game) yeah sure they lose but I saw a team w/talent and had a strong will to keep on playing.

Soccer sucks...kids play because it take very little skill. I admit that Pro players are skilled but lets put a 7 yr old soccer player against a 7 yr old Hockey player...somebody is gonna go crying to momma. America is Baseball, Football, Basketball and for a few of us Hockey..soccer is another infiltration of an outside culture and if you ask me we have enough crappy influences as it is!

The US has never won the world cup. Americans just aren't that interested in sports that Americans aren't competitive in at the international level. Hence there was a lot of interest in hockey after the miracle on ice, but nowadays poker gets better ratings than the NHL.

1. It doesn't have that much scoring in it compared to other spoirts.
2. It doesn't have history in the US compared to other sports.
3. It is not professionally visible on TV and newspapers as other sports.
4. It is not played as well in the US as other sports.
5. The best US athletes do not play soccer - they play other sports.

Would you like some more reasons.....?????

ps. I love soccer and officiated several hundred games....

Cuz as you may know my fellow Americans like more aggressive sports. They like everything bigger too like big players in American football, tall players in basketball and big bellies in baseball! Since soccer players aren't big in any of those three aspects--well, most aren't--that's why Americans don't find soccer attractive. Well, only among Hispanics such as myself is it more popular.

money for one thing. Plus there are just not enough teams in US soccer (and the fact they are THAT BAD in world cup play) not to mention it is a very physical and demanding sport you are constantly running for 90 minutes.
