Before downloading the file....try scanning the file with a viral protection software...but don't open the file til that's done....

Not if you download the program itself, but if you download a compressed .rar file from an unsecure place (some websites or file-sharing programs) then you might get viruses. In any case it would be a good idea what was said before: check every downloaded file with an antivirus.
