If I had to choose between the two, I'd say an Xbox 360. It has much more going for it than the PS3. Xbox Live Arcade is great for Indie developers to get a springboard for their games, and Microsoft actively encourages them, and has even released a program that lets home users make their own games, which they can potentially release on Arcade.
Also the multiplayer aspects are very polished, with multiplayer gaming on most games, with tags, online achievements and global ranking. It also has had a huge headstart on PS3, which can't be downplayed enough, and Sony has lost a lot of its clout in the electronics community. Also, if you look at the figures (wikipedia.org) it has also had the most dissappointing game launch out of the Next Gen consoles.
In terms of sales, XBOX360 has sold over 10,000,000 consoles worldwide since its release. This is of course unfair as the PS3 hasn't been out as long, (at 1.2 million colsoles). Third party developer support for the Xbox is at this stage also better than that for the PS3.
You'll be paying a much higher price on a console that doesnt really improve on anything the 360 has to offer.
But hey, why not dump them both and get a Wii? It seems to be winning the race in terms of sales and potential anyway. The Sony 6axis controller is a rip off from Nintendo anyway.
I really think that Sony has had it's heyday sadly.

PS3 -GOOD GAMES,OK BUT SLOW ON LINE, AND BLU-RAY DVD PLAYER
XBOX360-BETTER GAMES, BETTER ON LINE, BETTER PERFORMANCE, HDDVD PLAYER
IM NOT A SYSTEM BASHER BUT I SAY XBOX360 BECUASE I OWN BOTH I HAVE HELLA ISSUES WIT PS3 AND IF U DONT HAVE A COMPATIBLE HD TV AND IT HAS TO BE A HD TV THEN THE PS3 WILL LOOK LIKE SH%T AND YES I HAVE A 61IN HD TV SO I SEE BOTH SYSTEMS AT THERE FULL SO IF I WHERE U GO FOR 360 FOR NOW. OH AND U NEED A LOT OF THINGS FOR THE PS3 MAINLY A HD CORD WHICH DOES NOT COME WITH IT EITHER PACKAGE BUT 360'S $500 ONE DOES AND U GET A HARD DRIVE SO U CAN SAVE AND PLAY OLD XBOX GAMES ON IT AND WIRELESS .HAVE A GOOD 1 .

ummm it really depends on what games you like soo say...if you like action games then i would get the 360 cause it has Gears of War but ps3 has MGS4 coming out soon(MGS4=Metal Gear Solid 4) so really its your own choice so i would go to your local game retailer and check them both out before you make your purchase
