400 Years Of Slavery

2016-10-05 12:30:16 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Slavery began in Latin America earlier than it did in North America. When the Spaniards first came to the Caribbeaa and Central and South America, they brough with them measles and smallox which wiped out the natives. However, the Spanish came to plunder, and they needed labor, and they soon realized that the natives weren't going to be enough, so the African slave trade began, sometime in the 1500's.

On the other end, although slavery in the US ended in the 1860's, colonialism can be seen as a sort of slavery. Up until the 20th Century, Africa was dominated by colonial powers in Europe. The African nations had no control over their destiny, and the people existed merely as pawns and workhorses for the Europeans. So this could be lumped in under a broader view of slavery.

So there you have it: 1500's to 1900's, or about 400 years.

Slavery in Africa existed long before any European ever set foot on the continent. Much more than 400 years. Slavery in America, as you pointed out, only lasted for around 200 years and not 400.

I don't know. It can't be all together from every country because it would be much longer. In America it is much shorter. The first black slave brought to the U.S. (not Central America), was in 1526, but that was on a Spanish expedition. The first slaves bought by the U.S. was in 1619. The colony of Jamestown bought 20 slaves from a Dutch trader. These are the first African-American slaves in the colonies. Slavery in the U.S. ended with the Civil War in 1865. So it is actually, 246 years of slavery in the U.S..

Who said that Blacks were slaves for 400 years?! Were they talking about America?

Keep in mind that there were Black slaves in other countries before we were slaves in America. And if I have my facts straight in was Bartoleme De Las Casas who initiated the idea of having Africans as slaves and that was the late 1400s.

Besides, check out the dates when slavery was abolished in Brazil and other countries?

What is noted is about the date of starting that you mentioned, but it was going on in other places long before that. Thean after Linclon signed the proclimation of freedom, they were still in basic slavery for another 100 years or so.

I don't understand how any person could say they or their relatives/ancestors were slaves for 200/400 years, because no one could live that long. I just don't think it's right for someone to say they, as in themselves, were slaves. It's like," We suffered for 400 years....." That's like claiming credit for the suffering and hardship they never went through in the first place, only their ancestors did. And also, when someone tries to use this piece of history as a "reason" for their being treated unfairly in society, I don't see the connection, because what happened to their ancestors has nothing to do with them today. It's their character, and what they choose to do with their lives that will ultimately determine how they get looked upon.

slavery was in other countries before it hit America. I think slavery went on before the 1650's, though i think it was boomed by then. either way it's the effect of it.

Slavery actually started way back, before America was starting to be invaded by the Europeans, back in mother Africa, when tribes used to raid other tribes for whatever purpose they needed, it just affected them for a longer period of time, read your history, its' repeated over again and again and again, to one ethnic group or another and continues to happen somewhere in some form...
